If you’re anything like me, your to-do list is long, and time is short. Even the smallest tasks can be difficult to accomplish. There are many reasons for this, but one culprit is common to us all: interruptions.
Interruptions get a bad reputation. They derail our plans and disrupt our productivity. Sure, at times, they’ve blessed us. But overall, they feel like a curse. Scripture, however, speaks differently of interruptions. At the risk of sounding a bit blithe, let’s consider why all interruptions are blessed interruptions.
Interruptions Accomplish God’s Will
Interruptions are blessed primarily because they are from God. We know this because Prov. 19:21 tells us, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” In other words, when our plans are toppled, the sure and steady hand of the Lord is ultimately behind it. God interrupts our work to accomplish His will—His “good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom. 12:2).
Interruptions are also an opportunity for us to do God’s will. We are “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph. 2:10). Good things may fill our to-do lists, but they may not be the good works that God has crafted for us. These, He places before us in His perfect timing. His timing may interrupt our schedules and require us to set our own work aside, but the best use of our time is doing God’s will.
