Peace, Be Still

By: Laurie Pluimer

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10, ESV). I’ve often thought of this verse as a promise from God or, perhaps, a command. Be still. I must be still and know that God is God. I must be still, and then God will show up. In a world of constant chaos, wars, famine, depression, anxiety, suicide, disease, and all manner of evil, we wonder, How can we be still when we are in the midst of a lashing storm? And where is God? We, with King Solomon, ask, “Will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you…” (1 Kings 8:27, ESV). Have you wrestled with these words as well? Are you trying to be still while wondering why God doesn’t show up? I believe if we look closely at Psalm 46, we will find rest for our weary souls. Let’s begin where the psalmist ends:

"Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!” The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress" (Ps. 46:8-11, ESV).

I see three beautiful truths in this psalm. Let’s meditate on them together.
