The Same but Different
By: Shelly Esser
At our recent family Christmas gathering, my three-year-old grandson, Drew, stood by the door, doling out goodbye hugs. Then, he spoke words that left us all wide-eyed: “I’ll see you next time, and we’ll be the same but different.” All of us looked at each other, trying to grasp that such profound wisdom came from the mouth of a toddler!
His words struck a chord in my heart because they carried a truth we all experience. Every year, parts of us remain the same—familiar and steadfast—but other parts must change as we grow and look ahead to the new opportunities God has for us.
THE COMFORT OF SAMENESS
How comforting it is that not everything in life changes. There is a “sameness” that anchors us, a familiarity that helps us recognize ourselves and our loved ones. This sameness reminds us of God’s unchanging truths. Hebrews 13:8 promises us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
The Bible tells us that we are, and always will be, “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Ps. 139:14). We are uniquely designed by God to reflect His image (Gen. 1:27). “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph. 2:10). No matter what happens in life, our identity as deeply loved, forgiven daughters and sons of the King remains unshaken. God’s love is steadfast, even when we feel we’re not enough.
This sameness gives us a firm foundation to live by. We can confidently say we are His beloved children, created for a purpose, chosen to fulfill His pre-determined plan. These truths never change, no matter the storms or joys that come our way.
THE NEED FOR CHANGE
However, while there’s comfort in what remains constant, growth requires change—it requires us to be different. To stay exactly the same is to miss the opportunity for God’s transformative work in our lives.
As I look ahead to 2026, I don’t want to look back to 2025 and see no growth, no movement, no transformation. I don’t want to look at my life and see nothing different. I want to be closer to Christ a year from now than I am today. I want to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the opportunities God places before me instead of sitting in my comfort zone afraid to step out in faith and take risks.
This means asking some reflective questions:
Where do I need to grow in my relationship with Jesus this year?
What needs to change in how I currently love and serve my family, friends, and coworkers?
How can I become more like Jesus and less like myself?
The answers require intentionality, courage, and a willingness to let God increase in my life as I decrease—and to let the Holy Spirit make me different than I am today.
