When God Speaks
Learning to Listen and Respond.
By: Lisa M. Samra
Have you ever longed to hear God speak to you? Many of us yearn for His guidance, but learning to listen to God’s voice can sometimes feel elusive. Learning to listen to God’s voice is the underlying theme of Amy Boucher Pye’s book on prayer, 7 Ways to Pray. She explores the transformative power of engaging with God and discerning His voice in our daily lives. Her story is one of learning, surrender, and trust—one that invites us into a deeper relationship with God through listening for God’s voice.
Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with Amy about how she has learned to listen to God. One key lesson she emphasized is that hearing God is not just about receiving messages but also about obedience to His direction.
A Life Shaped by Scripture
Amy’s journey of listening to God began in an unexpected place—a summer camp in Minnesota. As a young girl, she experienced a moment of deep humiliation that left her feeling rejected. In the midst of her pain, a camp counselor shared verses from Philippians 1 with her:
“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy… being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 1:3-6).
For the first time, Amy realized that Scripture was God speaking directly to her. That moment ignited a passion to discover the different ways God communicates and led her on a journey of deepening her ability to listen.
Surrendering to God’s Plans
One of Amy’s most defining moments of listening to God came when she had to relinquish her desire to return to the United States after living in England for several years. She and her husband, Nicholas, originally planned to live in England temporarily before moving back. However, Amy sensed that God was leading them in a different direction.
“I needed to hear from God clearly,” Amy shared. During a spiritual retreat, she set aside time to seek God’s guidance. In the stillness, she felt God speak into her heart: Give up your campaign. Amy understood that this was about surrendering her strong desire to return home. Though grieving the loss of her original plan, she chose obedience, trusting that God’s will was ultimately for her good.
“We know that He is a loving Father,” Amy affirmed. “It doesn’t make obedience easy, but it makes it right.”
Cultivating a Heart That Listens
Listening to God isn’t just about waiting for dramatic revelations. “As we grow in that discernment,” Amy said, “we learn that we are hearing God all the time.” The key is developing an openness and receptivity to the Spirit. She likens God’s voice to falling snowflakes—gentle, quiet, and often subtle.
“God’s words might only be as small as those snowflakes,” Amy described, “but you don’t grab a snowflake. You open your hands to catch it.”
Practical Ways to Listen to God
If you long to hear God more clearly, here are two prayer practices that Amy recommends:
1. Personalizing Scripture
One powerful way to hear God’s voice is by personalizing Scripture. Personalizing Scripture is taking the time to write out Bible verses and inserting your name, making the words more personal. For example, Matthew 23:12 says: “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Writing it as “Amy, when you exalt yourself, you will be humbled, and when you humble yourself, you will be exalted” transforms it into a more personal word from God, like “these words could be intended for me.” This practice can make Scripture come alive in new and meaningful ways. (Suggested passages to personalize: Matthew 6:25-34, Luke 6:20-26, John 17:20-26.)
2. Keeping a Prayer Journal
Journaling is another effective tool for developing a listening heart. Amy encourages writing out prayers that include the joys, sorrows, disappointments, and frustrations that we may never be able to fully express to another person. Over time, reviewing past journal entries can reveal patterns of God’s guidance that may not have been immediately obvious.
“It’s vitally important for people to develop personal practices of prayer to sustain them,” Amy shared. Looking back at past prayers has often helped her discern God’s faithfulness and direction in hindsight—to see that He was speaking to her.
The Lifelong Journey of Listening
Learning to listen to God is an ongoing adventure. Each time we quiet our hearts in prayer, we create space for Him to speak. Whether through Scripture, journaling, or simply paying attention to the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit, we can develop a deeper awareness of God’s voice in our lives.
Amy’s story reminds us that God longs to speak to us—we just need to be willing to listen.
