Celebrating in the Middle of Uncertainty
By Erika English Mayer
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” ~1 Thessalonians 5:18
Years ago, my four-year-old son stopped sleeping. Instead, he raged throughout the nights, stuck in violent compulsions, begging to wash his already bloody hands for the millionth time. My husband and I would take turns lying on his floor to comfort and protect him, trying to rest in between his bouts of hysteria. When it was my turn, I’d cry silently, feeling cold and alone in this perplexing and heartbreaking turn of events.
As we approach the twelve-month mark of his diagnosis, we are celebrating. Yes, you heard me right. We are not celebrating a miraculous healing; we are still navigating an uncertain medical future with our son. Nor are we celebrating a mountaintop year of life full of observable abundance. No—we are celebrating in the middle of the valley. In the middle of the medical rollercoaster, cancelled plans and vacations, unresolved legal entanglements, an uncertain career path for me, and uncharted life as bereaved parents of a life we didn’t imagine. We are still celebrating. How?
