This Little Light of Mine
By: Emily Marszalek
After accepting a new job and giving my notice to my employer, word of my coming departure soon made the rounds to my coworkers at the local university I worked at. Soon after, I received an unexpected email from the director of a neighboring department. While I did not work directly with her nor know her well, I had occasionally corresponded with her and assisted her in troubleshooting several issues. Keenly aware that she was not well liked by many of my coworkers, illustrated by their groans when they saw her name on their caller ID, I made a deliberate effort to treat her with extra kindness and provide prompt responses to her inquiries.
Expressing her sadness at the news of my exit and wishing me well in my new endeavors, she ended her email by saying, “You are the light in that office.”
Her email deeply touched my heart.
Occupying an entry level, "bottom of the totem-pole,” position in my office, I frequently questioned whether I was having a positive impact—or any impact at all—on those I worked with. In the midst of my questioning, I found hope and inspiration in Colossians 3:23, which helped infuse purpose in every task I was assigned, no matter how menial: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
YOUR LIFE IS A TESTIMONY TO OTHERS
While I didn’t have the most exciting job, I always sought to be a hard-worker and to express kindness and helpfulness to both coworkers and clients, especially the challenging ones. While I didn’t know if my efforts were seen or had a meaningful impact on those around me, I was assured that God saw, and that mattered most.
That unexpected email, however, reminded me that my behavior, attitude and interactions are seen by those around me and can act as a powerful testimony to others. It was a reminder that I am called to act as a bright light for Jesus, and can be successful in that endeavor, no matter what position or job title I hold.
Jesus tasks us with being the light of the world and instructs us to let that light shine before others.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
What a beautiful image. As we are filled with the light of Christ, we are to shine that light for all to see. As others see our light, they will be drawn to the source of our light—Christ.
